Transport Regulation and Legislation
28/07/2016
As you can imagine, there are numerous steps required to get products safely and securely transported from one location to another. Throughout the entire process, the safety of not only the products being moved, but also staff involved, is paramount.
In such a diverse and important area in the logistics industry, there are a number of strict transport regulations that need to be followed. To give you a better understanding of how we operate here at Silk Contract Logistics, we’ve listed the road and maritime regulations and legislations we carefully adhere to plus some extra information about rail transportation for interest’s sake:
Road Transport
For the sake of remaining on the subject of larger-scale logistics, we’ll focus on heavy vehicle regulation. The Heavy Vehicle National Law, commencing in February 2014, covers everything including vehicle standards, fatigue management, heavy vehicle accreditation and several other matters. This reform is in place in all states except the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
Maritime Transport
The SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) International Convention, which is commonly seen as the most important international treaty in terms of keeping merchant ships safe, was first created due to the infamous sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Since its introduction there have been a few amendments, however its overall goal remains the same; to make the transportation of goods from port to port as safe as possible.
Rail Transport
As of January 2013, the National Rail Safety Regulator has been in operation to create a singular set of safety laws relating to rail transportation to be followed Australia-wide. This includes everything from competency testing through to fatigue risk management plus much more to improve safety.
As you can see, the industry works hard with Governmental bodies to ensure all involved are as safe as possible against unnecessary accidents and injuries. At Silk Contract Logistics we pride ourselves on our intense focus on safety. We’re fully committed to our goal of zero injuries, and continue to go above and beyond to achieve this result.
